Dr. Charlie Chen is a palliative care physician working in Calgary, and is the Medical Director for the Palliative End-of-Life Care Program for Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Calgary in the Division of Palliative Medicine. Prior to moving to Alberta in the summer of 2019, he had been UBC Program Director for both the Family Medicine Enhanced Skills Year of Added Competency and the Subspecialty in Adult Palliative Medicine. He also had a brief tenure as the Medical Director for palliative care services in Fraser Health, BC.
Charlie is passionate about the promotion of the integration of a palliative approach to care across all health sectors for patients facing life-limiting illnesses. A dedicated and award-winning medical educator, he immensely enjoys working with residents and medical students. He has also developed curriculum for Postgraduatete palliative care education and for continuing professional development.
Charlie graduated from UBC Medical School in 1994 and subsequently completed his family medicine residency and a 6-month fellowship in palliative care at McGill University. He also completed a Master of Education degree from SFU in 2014. Initially working as both a family physician and palliative care consultant, Charlie now devotes full time to serving patients with palliative care needs.
Charlie is a Master Facilitator for Pallium LEAP education and a Scientific Consultant with Pallium Canada. He recently finished a 2-year term as a Board member of the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians and was the Secretary for one of those years.
