Biography

Dr. Hagen is an academic neurological oncologist, a Palliative Care physician, and a health services medical leader. He has led CIHR-funded and AIHS-funded multicentre, multi-year research teams related to pain control and also related to knowledge translation. He has been involved in reviewing applications for research and products of research, including a four-year tenure as Chair of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research Panel on Palliative and End of Life Care.

Having been conferred a Professor Emeritus role has helped him maintain strong academic contacts and provided access to relevant resources as he focuses more on public policy and quality of healthcare. Currently, he has the Medical Advisor to the NWT Department of Health and Social Services, and is also a Medical Advisor with Alberta Health. He has provided advice to several regulatory and other bodies across Canada related to pain control and quality of healthcare delivery. He has also Chaired committees which have authored guidelines for transgender care (NWT) and tools in Primary Care for transgender care (Alberta); and has recently worked with colleagues in the NWT to established Allergy Referral Guidelines.

Summary of Research

Dr. Hagen has authored or co-authored over 100 peer reviewed papers, mostly related to symptom assessment and symptom control, and knowledge translation. He continues to teach in the Cumming School of Medicine, has done so for the past 30 years.
