Biography

Dr. Jan-Willem Henning received his medical degree (MBChB) in 1999 from the University of Orange- Free State, South Africa. After completing internship and community service in Family Medicine in 2001, he moved to rural Manitoba and worked as a General Practitioner in the community as well as a General Practitioner Oncologist (GPO) with Cancer Care Manitoba. In May 2005 he relocated to Calgary with his family, and worked in urban family practice as well as doing clinical sessions at Tom Baker Cancer Centre. He found oncology practice so interesting and fulfilling that he elected to re-train and to be licensed as a Medical Oncologist. He obtained his specialty license in Internal Medicine as well as his Certificate of Special Competence in Medical Oncology (FRCPC) in 2011. He then joined the University of Calgary and Tom Baker Cancer Centre in January 2012 as a staff Medical Oncologist and Clinical Assistant Professor. His areas of clinical interests include breast cancer, sarcoma malignancies and AYA (adolescent and young adult) oncology. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC), American Society of Oncology (ASCO), executive member of Canada Cancer Trials Group (CCTG) and member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Summary of Research

Dr. Henning’s research interests include research outcomes (real world evidence) in breast cancer, sarcoma and Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) oncology. He is a lead investigator in several phase II and III clinical trials for corporate as well as pharmaceutical sponsored clinical trials, which allows access to potentially new and novel therapies to his patients. Dr. Henning serves as executive member for the Sarcoma Canada Cancer Trials Group (CCTG) committee and recently has been appointed co-lead AYA-node on the national study – Precision Oncology for Children and Young People (PROFYLE).

He is the immediate past Program Director for the Medical Oncology Residency Program and currently holds the vice-chair position on the Royal College Specialty Committee for Medical Oncology training. He continues to foster education for both medical trainees, his peers, locally and nationally, and he has developed educational tools and events for patients to improve their quality of life and cancer journey.

Dr. Henning is currently the medical lead for the Southern Alberta AYA-program and also co-lead of the Systemic Treatment Committee at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
