Medical Leader, TBCC CRU, Dr. Jose Monzon

It is with pleasure that we announce that Dr. Jose Monzon has accepted the role of Medical Leader, Tom Baker Cancer Centre Clinical Research Unit, effective July 20, 2020.

Jose is well known to many of us. He obtained his PhD in 2001 at the University of Toronto and then went on to complete his MD at the same institution in 2005.  He then underwent Internal Medicine training at the University of British Columbia in 2008 and completed his Medical Oncology residency there in 2010.  He underwent clinical trials fellowship training at the NCIC CTG in Kingston with Dr. Janet Dancey and followed this up with additional Investigational New Drug (IND) training at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto in 2012. Jose has won numerous awards for his work within the clinical trials domain including the Elizabeth Eisenhauer IND Young Investigator Award in 2013.

Jose joined us at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in 2012 as a Clinical Assistant Professor and is currently a member of the Cutaneous and GI tumor groups and chair of the Investigator Initiated Trial (IIT) committee, which is on track to administering $600K in IIT funding this year.

Jose has an excellent track record within the clinical trials field and is nationally recognized. He has spearheaded, chaired multiple trials and currently chairs a Canadian multicenter adjuvant rectal cancer trial involving statins and a cancer of unknown primary   clinical trial involving PD1 inhibitors.   He is a member of the national CCTG Clinical Trials Committee which sets the strategic direction for this cancer cooperative group.

I would also like to thank and voice my appreciation to Dr. Danny Heng for his exceptional leadership over the past three years as the Medical Leader of the CRU. During his tenure we have seen a growth in both the quality and quantity of our clinical trial activity and significant increased engagement with our industry partners and philanthropic support.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Jose Monzon to his new role.
