Biography

Dr. David Mak completed his BSc (Hons) in Physiology followed by medical school at the University of British Columbia. He then pursued residency training in Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto, where he developed strong research interests in lung, genitourinary, and pediatric oncology, as well as medical education. He has had the opportunity to present and publish his work at major international conferences, including ASCO, ASTRO, CARO, the World Conference on Lung Cancer, and the International Society of Pediatric Oncology. David remains an active member of the CARO Education Committee and Palliative Radiotherapy working group, and is a mentor for medical students and RO residents in several interest groups and mentorship programs. He is excited to work with world-renowned experts at the Arthur Child Cancer Centre to contribute further to clinical trials, medical education, AYA support, and opportunities in leadership and administration. Outside of medicine, Dr. Mak also actively serves as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserves. In his downtime, he enjoys spending time with his family, as well as skiing, biking, badminton, movies, Broadway shows, and all things water sports.

Summary of Research

Dr. Mak has had extensive research experience in lung, genitourinary, and pediatric oncology, where his work has been recognized and won awards both nationally and internationally. Dr. Mak also has a passion for medical education, teaching, and mentorship. He has been a member of the CARO education committee since 2022, has been involved with admissions and coursework at several MD undergraduate programs, and has been a grant reviewer for the American Association for Cancer Education. He is currently working on becoming the local principal investigator in NRG/CCTG trials in GU and breast cancers.
