Dr. Morris began in 1997 as a Medical Oncologist at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre after completing his Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology residencies in Calgary. He obtained his MD from the University of Calgary in 1992 after completing a PhD in Immunology at Queen’s University in 1989, where he also obtained his undergraduate degree.
He has held the role of Medical Oncology Training Program Director and Director of Oncology training programs. He has directly supervised over 50 graduate students, 10 PDFs, over 75 Medical Oncology residents and numerous Internal Medicine and medical students. More recently he was Head, Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Oncology, at the University of Calgary as well as, Head, Section of Medical Oncology, Alberta Health Services between 2013-2020.
Dr. Morris was a founding member and senior staff scientist in the TBCC Translational Laboratories since 2001 and in 2011 took on the role of Director of the TBCC Translational Laboratories, which he held until 2019. His translational and clinical research has been focused on reovirus in the treatment of various cancers and lead the first in man cancer reovirus clinical trial. He led the provincial Lung Tumor Group from 2007 -2013 and was on the CCTG (NCIC) Sarcoma Executive for 8 years.
In March 2021 he accepted the position of Dept Head, Dept of Oncology, Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, Facility Medical Director of the TBCC, and the Medical Lead of the New Cancer Centre. He is an Associate Senior Medical Director of CancerControl Alberta, Alberta Health Services. Dr. Morris has authored over 300 peer reviewed abstracts and manuscripts and has been PI on multiple research grants (CIHR, BCSC, CBCF, CRS, ACF, AIHS).
