Biography

Dr. Gregg Nelson is Professor and Chair of Gynecologic Oncology at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta. His research centers on the development, implementation, and evaluation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways in obstetrics/gynecology and cancer surgery.

 

An early and leading innovator in applying ERAS principles to gynecologic oncology, Dr. Nelson is the lead author of the ERAS Society Guidelines for Gynecologic/Oncology, first published in 2016 and subsequently updated in 2019, 2023, and 2026. He has also held major roles in several other ERAS Society guidelines, including serving as senior author for the cytoreductive surgery/HIPEC and Cesarean delivery guidelines.

 

Dr. Nelson is the Provincial Physician Lead for Surgical Quality in Alberta and Chair of the Scientific Committee of the ERAS Society. He serves as an Associate Editor for Gynecologic Oncology. He has secured more than $14 million in research funding, authored over 250 peer‑reviewed publications and 12 book chapters, and is lead editor of the ERAS Society Handbook for Obstetrics & Gynecology. He has delivered 170 invited lectures on ERAS, including 100 internationally.

 

In recognition of his leadership in transforming perioperative care and gynecologic oncology, Dr. Nelson received the 2024 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Gynecologic Surgery from the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS). This honor is reserved for individuals with a sustained record of academic excellence whose clinical or educational contributions have defined new standards or paradigms in the field.
