Biography

John W. Robinson, PhD, is currently an adjunct associate professor of Psychosocial Oncology and Clinical Psychology. He retired in June 2018 after a 30+ year career as a clinical psychologist in the Department of Psychosocial Oncology and as a member of the Genital Urinary and Gynaecological Cancer Programs at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

He is the former Director of the Psychosocial Oncology Fellowship Program, U of C Department of Oncology; Director of the Calgary Pre-Doctoral Clinical Psychology Program; Director of Ovarian Cancer Canada; and Executive member of the Genital Urinary Disease Site Committee and Quality of Life Committee of the Canadian Cancer Clinical Trials Group.

John has been honoured with several awards. He received the CAPO Award for Clinical Excellence; U of C Department of Psychology award for research supervision; Luminary Award for Contributions to Education, Faculty of Medicine; Team Innovation Award from the Department of Oncology for the OASIS (Oncology and Sexuality and Survivorship) program; and the CAPO Innovation Award for the Androgen Deprivation Education Program which is based in the book  he co-authored, Androgen Deprivation Therapy: An essential guide for patients and their loved ones. The book, having sold over 60,000 copies, is in its 2nd edition and has been translated into French.

John’s primary research interest is in the creation and evaluation of interventions to assist patients and their partners to recover sexually after cancer treatment. He is widely published and his research has been funded by CIHR, Canadian Cancer Society, Ovarian Cancer Canada, Movember, Prostate Cancer Canada, Calgary Foundation, Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute, and the Canadian Male Sexual Health Council.
