Dr. Michael Speca is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Psychosocial Oncology in the Department of Oncology, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary and former Post-doctoral Fellow in Psychosocial Oncology at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. As a Clinical Psychologist at the Centre’s Department of Psychosocial Oncology until June 2020, he counselled cancer patients and their families and facilitated a range of group support programs including: the Centre’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program, which he co-founded in 1995; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Groups for Insomnia; and Supportive-Expressive Therapy Groups for metastatic breast cancer patients. His research and publications have examined the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for reducing distress and improving the quality of life of patients and their families and have appeared in journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, The New England Journal of Medicine and Supportive Care in Cancer. In 2012 he was awarded the Clinical Excellence Award from the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology and in 2018 he was presented the Gavin Stuart Award for Clinical Excellence and Professionalism, Department of Oncology, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary.
