The mission of the Division of Surgical Oncology is to improve the care of cancer patients through excellent clinical treatment, research and knowledge translation. Some members are primarily appointed to the Department of Oncology and the rest through the Department of Surgery. Members provide expertise in many areas of cancer treatment including head and neck, cutaneous, breast, endocrine, gastrointestinal, bone and soft tissue and oncologic reconstruction. Members are leaders in these fields on a national and international level.
Strategic Plan
It is the goal of the division to play a leading role in improving the multidisciplinary treatment and outcomes of cancer. Through comprehensive program development and multidisciplinary clinics, members are improving access, introducing new treatments and studying outcomes. Knowledge generation is key to ensuring that our division stays on the forefront of oncology and provides the best possible care to residents of Southern Alberta.
Education
The Section of Surgical Oncology is active in the undergraduate education of medical students as well as residents from general surgery, plastic surgery and dermatology. The Section runs a highly sought after two-year fellowship in General (Complex) Surgical Oncology approved by the Royal College and the American Board of Surgery as well as an AAES accredited Fellowship in Endocrine Surgery. In addition, there are also opportunities for fellowship training in endocrine surgery, oncologic reconstructive surgery and research.
Research
All members are very active in research. Highlights include outcomes research in breast, melanoma, sarcoma, endocrine tumors and advanced gastrointestinal cancers. There are also active research programs in metabolomics, ERAS, education and clinical trials.
